Scams

Sadly there will be those who see to use the current crisis to their own advantage. We have been told of the following scams unfortunately there will be others, use your own good judgement and check out the Full Facts website.

Coronavirus-related fraud reports increase by 400% in March.

The majority of reports are related to online shopping scams where people have ordered protective face masks, hand sanitiser, and other products, which have never arrived. We have also received over 200 reports of coronavirus-themed phishing emails. Don't click on any suspicious links.

We’ve heard from other boroughs via OWL (they run Neighbourhood Watch, Business Watch and a number of other schemes) about individuals knocking on doors claiming to be conducting virus testing in some areas.

The police have indicated that the NHS are NOT conducting any door to door initiatives to test individuals for the Coronavirus.

Please help raise awareness and if anyone knocks on your doors pretending to be doing those tests, please call 999.

A Message from the Department of Education:

"We have been informed some parents have received an email stating: ‘As schools will be closing, if you're entitled to free school meals, please send your bank details and we'll make sure you're supported’. This is a scam email - do not respond, and delete immediately."
